HISTORY
The history of a city, a country, and a nation is made up of facts about important aspects of social life. Since the first creation of surplus products (in an economic sense), trade has represented one of the most important sources of livelihood, as well as an opportunity for people to meet and connect civilizations.
From the very beginning, trade took place where goods were produced, but also at designated locations intended for commerce. This is how specialized places for wholesale trade began to emerge.
According to written records, the first market was established in 1824. One hundred years later, the Bajloni Market was opened, which initially operated as a wholesale market.
As the city expanded, so did the need for a suitable location which, due to the specific requirements for wholesale trade, had to be situated outside the city center. After World War II and the country’s recovery, the city wholesale market was located in the Mali Mokri Lug settlement, on the outskirts of the city.
In the last decades of the 20th century, the wholesale market moved to another part of the city, near the highway, in New Belgrade (Block 53).
Today, this location is home to Belgrade Wholesale Market, a business entity undergoing rapid expansion. Wholesale markets do not have a long tradition in our region, as they developed during the last two decades of the 20th century, unlike retail markets.
At this location, trade initially took place on an asphalt plateau directly from trucks, and at the beginning of the 21st century, a four-level facility was built, housing retail units, warehouse spaces, and offices.
